Three people are now known to have died in a collision between two cars on the A470 in the Conwy Valley on Friday.

David Lesley Crapper, who was 56, died of his injuries at Ysbyty Gwynedd hospital in Bangor on Saturday morning.

Husband and wife, John and Jean Gilleland, both 76 and from the Chester area, died at the scene.

Police said they urgently want to speak to a man who was driving a red Vauxhall Vectra travelling from Llanrwst towards Llandudno at the time.

The female driver of the Land Rover Freelander, in which Mr Crapper was a passenger, is in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the A470 at Maenan near Llanrwst at 1541 BST on Friday.

Mr and Mrs Gilleland, who were in a Vauxhall Meriva, were regular visitors to the area, police said.

Mr Crapper, and and the un-named female driver, were in the Land Rover Freelander.

The road was closed for several hours for police investigations.

The Vauxhall Meriva was being driven in the direction of Llanrwst while the Freelander was heading in the opposite direction.

Mr Crapper, who was known as Lesley, was the son of Elvira and the late Trefor Crapper from the Eglwysbach area of Conwy county

In a tribute released by police the family said:"Les Min-Afon, as he was known locally, was a larger than life character who was well known in the Conwy Valley."

The family said he was a member of the community based team at Rhyd-y-Creuau, a centre owned by the environmental education charity The Field Studies Council.

"He loved his music and he took part in many voluntary run organisations.

"He will be sorely missed by everyone but he will never be forgotten," the family added.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to contact them on 101 (if in Wales) or 0845 6071002.
